Week 5: Applying Constructivist Principles

This week after discussing how people learn, the changes made in education over the years and the implementation of constructivist principles. We worked as groups to develop effective well designed and practical lessons that would combine constructivism and technology. The following link will take you to my group's project.

Constructivist Project

Our lesson was designed to create a learning environment that is complex and challenging, but the goals of the lesson were fun, relevant, and attainable by its participants. Students worked collaboratively to develop social constructivist principles where all participants contributed. The learning was student driven, and it was interactive which keeps everyone involved.

Week 4: General Questions about Constructivism

General Constructivism

How does this effect how we design, develop, and use technologically-based instruction?

Constructivists believe that a student’s learning environment should be complex and challenging. This means that when designing a lesson, tasks would need to require multiple steps. They should also require the students to interact with each other when solving the problem. In using technology, a class Wiki would be a good example of constructivism that is technology based.

How do we bring constructivist ideas together with technology to make learning more effective?

One way to merge the two is through lesson development. Lessons would be developed that are student centered and self-directed. A Webquest would be a good example of a self-directed lesson. These types of lessons would require the interactive learning of concepts which is how we apply knowledge in our everyday lives.

What implications does it have that are clearly different from those of behaviorism or cognitivism?

The knowledge gained by the student is not fixed. It changes as it is constructed, and in social constructivism, the knowledge is constructed by contributing participants within a group. Instruction is student centered, and facilitating and guiding overcome the traditional idea of teaching.

Why is constructivism so popular nowadays?

I think the resurgence of constructivism is a direct result of our changing environment. We no longer have the manufacturing and industrial environment that we had in the past. Now, we are a service oriented society that has to work collaboratively and in order to develop students that are capable and competent to perform in the 21st century work force, they need to learn and apply 21st century skills.

What are the limits of taking a constructivist approach out in the real world of education (at all levels) and training?

The two main restrictions involving constructivism I feel are: 1. getting a teacher to leave their comfort zone and try something new, and 2. it is student centered and driven which means the student needs to be self motivated, and to be quite honest I haven’t seen to many of them.

Week 3: Why ITEC?

Current Issues: Issue 1

A Masters in Instructional Technology is a degree that prepares students to improve instruction by integrating technology in the design of the instruction, and in the delivery methods used to present the material. These would include the use of hardware such as the SmartBoard, SmartPad, LCD Projectors, high speed printers, multimedia-computers, and other supportive hardware resources, and they would also include various software and internet applications such as Office Suite, Excel @ Math, Learning Express Advantage, and any of the Larson Series packages. These software applications allow teachers to work with familiar tools which can then be uploaded for easy access (Cloud, 2004). Another area of importance involving the design of instruction is in the techniques used to present the material. With technology being a mainstay in our society, we must develop learners that can be productive in the 21st century. This will include the use of techniques such as group projects, scaffolding, self monitoring and the constructivist approach to instruction. As an instructor, one must plan on gaining the understanding of where and how these technologies can be used to develop 21st century learners, and with this newly acquired knowledge surrounding instructional technology, one would be able to instruct students in an educational setting on how to apply these technologies as well as determine what types of technology can be used. These applications would also allow one to branch out into a supportive role as an instructional technologist either in the private or public sector.

Instructional technology is the study and implementation of research that involves the solving of instructional problems or the enhancement of instruction by improving its design and production. Some of the early research was often times comparative in nature. They looked more closely at what difference there was in the results of effectiveness concerning varying media formats. This as stated in the text makes little sense because any media format can be used effectively or ineffectively. It is not what is used to deliver the information that is important, but rather, what is being delivered (Tiene, 2001). That is true in all aspects of instruction because there is such a diverse learning population. We have for the most part made schools use total inclusion which has forced instructors to develop a level of differentiation as never before, and one of the best methods I have found to overcome the varying learning styles and levels of understanding is through technology. An example of this would be the intervention process I use with the Learning Express Advantage site. I allow students that have difficulty in a particular area to seek intervention in the areas they are deficient. After they have completed the intervention process, they can retake the assessment or resubmit a project for a new grade. This allows students to monitor their progress and take ownership of their learning which makes learning more meaningful. Another set of tools for instructional technology which are inexpensive, effective, and easy to use are screencasting and classroom response systems. The screencasting software allows librarians to create online self-paced tutorials, and the classroom response systems provide direct feedback (Roberts, 2005)

I am studying instructional technology to improve my knowledge level of what technologies are available and how they can best be used to benefit instruction. This information will assist me greatly when I become a Library Media Specialist, and it will allow me to play a more collaborative role in the development of curriculum. In becoming a Library Media Specialist, I will be able to solve problems involving instructional needs as well as provide tools to enhance instruction throughout the entire school. In the high school setting, I will also be able to assist students in the application and use of various Web 2.0 technological tools such as wikis, blogs, podcasts, and newsletters (Cromity, 2008)

After the completion of my degree, there will be a lot of professional development to remain current with the changes and advances being made throughout the field of instructional technology, and I plan to continue pursuing these opportunities. The methods I will use to stay current will include reading various research information as well as literature on innovations in the field of instructional technology, and then, applying that newly gained knowledge and instructing others on its applications.

Week 2: Big Issues in ITEC

Big Issues in ITEC

Advertising influences how and what we purchase, and I think that is the biggest issue concerning technology what works and how do we implement it.

With the financial problems surrounding most school districts, our concerns should revolve around the idea of what gives the most bang for the buck, and I don’t mean some statistical analysis done by a technology provider. Rather, a comparative study done on the results of students with and without technology.

Technology has helped my classroom to provide a learning environment that encompasses a diverse group of learners. I teach at a total inclusion school, and I have students with learning disabilities that excel when they use technology. I don’t use it every day, but when I use technology these students takes over. They practically teach the class. Without these technological resources, I doubt that I would be as successful.

Week 1: Personal Profile

Hi, everyone!
I am currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Instructional Technology with the Library Media Licensure.

I am an Integrated Math teacher and assistant football coach at the Canton Local School district, and I have no experience as a Library Media Specialist. This is my sixth year of teaching, and it is my fifth year at Canton Local. My life experience has included the Navy (right after high school) in 1983. Then, I entered the industrial work force which included stints as a boiler helper, machine operator, high voltage technician, welder and steel worker. I graduated from Kent in 2003 with my undergrad while working full time, raising a family and coaching.

My wife's name is Suzanne which I have been married to for close to nineteen years (Nov. 4th). Wow! The time flies. I have two sons Donnie and Derek. They are both students at Canton South where I teach. Donnie is a senior and Derek is a sophomore.

My future goal is to gain employment as a Library Media Specialist.
